WRT 386 Audio Storytelling

Audio storytelling is the art of telling stories exclusively with sound. It means carrying a microphone into a hurricane, a rehab center, a forest preserve, a kissing booth, or a birthday party. It is the placement of silences, the discovery of voices, the rhythm of language, found sound, and the beat of music.

In this course, students will inhabit many roles—writer, producer, researcher, editor, interviewer, collaborator—and, above all, investigator of sound. Students will focus on personal narratives rather than just facts. The class will study and deconstruct influential audio programs, research personal narratives, write scripts, learn audio-editing techniques, and produce their own work. No previous experience required.
